The 13th Annual Meeting 


The Nature of Philosophy and Its Relevance

 

Society for Philosophy in the Contemporary World
Western Carolina University Cullowhee, North Carolina

July 22nd – 27th, 2006

 The Society invites submissions in which philosophical research engages the issue of what we as philosophers are doing.  Diverse philosophical approaches and methodologies are welcome and the theme can be broadly interpreted.

Please submit papers that address the topic broadly conceived.  Possible subthemes are: 


 
  • Philosophy as Practice
  • Philosophy as Transformative
  • Philosophy as Activism
  • The Role of Hope In and For Philosophical Activity
  • Can Different Conceptions of Philosophy Be Reconciled?
  • What Can Philosophers, qua Philosophers, Contribute to Communities?
  • What Can Philosophers, qua Philosophers, Contribute to Social Causes?
  • What Does It Mean to Do Philosophy Responsibly?
  • Philosophy as Destructive to Human Flourishing
  • The Relevance of Ancient, Medieval, or Modern Philosophy
  • The Relevance of Religion to Philosophy or vice versa
  • The Relevance of Literature to Philosophy or vice versa
  • The Relevance of History to Philosophy or vice versa

 

 

 Standard submissions: 3,000 word maximum paper. Alternative presentation formats and creative proposals will be given consideration.

 Submissions are due on March 15, 2006.   Electronic submissions are preferred.

 All papers accepted for presentation will be considered for publication in the journal.
